How to significantly save the cost of lighting in municipality?

Košeca village was one of the first municipality in Europe which exchange inefficient and outdated lamps for energy saving and ecological LED diode lights. The progress of the project as well as experience with a new type of lighting we discussed with the mayor Radomír Brtáň.

When and why did you start considering the idea of reconstruction of public lighting?

Public lighting in the village, as in many other towns and cities showed obsolescence and economic inefficiency, because there were lights installed with unnecessarily high energy consumption. This was the cause of finding new alternatives and reconstruct our lighting. It was in 2007.

Who did you contact? How the project was being prepared? What type of grant you successfully used?

We were looking for opportunities to get the means for making work that we ourselves were unable to refinance. Would be an opportunity to use funds the Norwegian Financial Mechanism, and so we filed a request for obtaining grants. We were very pleased when we arrived a positive answer. With whole process helped us experts in LED lighting - the company ECOLOGIC.

Why did you decide for LEDs as a technology that replaced the previously sodium lamps?

Our village also used sodium lamps, but some lights were the "tubular". After a review of energy consumption lamps and comparison with the proposed new LED technology convinced us numbers that we are going in the right direction. Quite a significant issue and assessment of the factors was the lifetime of lamp / source /, where especially in the tubular lamps is very small.

Modernization was conducted before more than two years ago. What energy and eco-nomic savings you were able to achieve during this period and what is the overall impression of the village and the citizens of the new type lighting?

year   consuption kWh   sum in EUR
2008 103249 15 637,91 €
2009 75657 12 799,23 €
2010 69069 10 880,84 €

The economy looks like this. Replacing the lamp was conducted in 2009 and it is therefore appropriate to compare the years 2008 and 2010. Some of the lights / approx 50 pcs / stay original, because we could not all replaced. This happened because of ineligible costs associated with relamping around main road of I. class, what we are trying to deal with the application for the reconstruction of the light and wait for the result of goverment. This is taking more than one year. I personally understand the installation of LED lighting as very positive for the village with regard to lower costs for public lighting. People get used to the innovation very quickly. Finally I would like a claim that one reason for saving is the fact that the new lights illuminate only public communications only and not all above and behind lamp. Therefore, we could afford to install lights only with an output of 25 and 50 W.

Thank you very much for the interview, which will certainly serve as an inspiration for other municipalities how ecologically reduce operating costs for street lighting while increasing safety and quality of lighting in cities.
