McCain frozen foods - Scarborough facility uses LED lighting

McCains wanted an energy saving solution to the lighting of cold stores in their Scarborough facility.

A project was set up in conjunction with Carbon Action Yorkshire, Constellation Lighting and Yorkshire Forward to review a better, more energy efficient, solution to their lighting.

McCain Foods were lighting their cold store with an array of 36 x 400W sodium light fittings, mounted 10m high.

LED luminaires were chosen for their bright 5,800K output, adjustable outer LED pods, robust construction and minimal 90W power consumption. Each 400W sodium was directly replaced with a these luminaires and the end results were remarkable.

LED's not only reduced the direct electricity consumption of the lighting but also had a positive thermal effect on the plant. With the thermal effect included, each sodium fitting was using 5,723kWh of electricity per annum, whilst the LEDs draws just 841kWh, an energy saving of 85%!

At 10p/kWh the annual savings by adopting LED technology are almost 18,000, giving a project payback period of 1.9 years (including all installation costs).

LED luminaires have proved extremely reliable and require no maintenance, in stark contrast to their conventional counterparts. This is a further cost saving for McCain Foods.

The strike time of 100ns has also proved a step change benefit.  This has allowed the subsequent addition of sensor controlling, delivering additional energy savings through switching the lights off when no personnel are present - another cost saving for the customer.

The improved lighting quality through the 5800K daylight colour allows labels in the cold store to be read more easily, making a positive contribution to the working environment and health and safety of the workforce.
