Modernization of lighting system in the company AXRO, Germany

The Project

AXRO GmbH was founded in 1990 as a specialist retailer and distributor in what was then a young market for office communications. Since that time, the mid-sized company has offered successful professional solutions for brand name devices, consumables like ink and toner, and OEM replacement parts. About 6,000 original items can be delivered from the warehouse right away. Global exports to some 50 countries account for about 45% of sales.

As part of its logistics concept, AXRO GmbH operates a traditional warehouse with two small offices. The previous lighting consisted of 20-year-old row lighting with fluorescent lamps (58 W) that were installed below the concrete beams and suspended at a distance of one metre. With a ceiling height of just under nine metres and shelf height of up to seven metres, there were many instances of damage to the row lights when product pallets were being stored on the highest shelves. Lighting renovation was undertaken to eliminate this problem in the future.
The first goal, however, was to improve the lighting level and achieve the greatest possible reduction in energy costs in conjunction with significant CO2 savings. The latter was critical for receiving additional subsidies from the city of Hamburg.

The Solution

The decision was made in favour of the innovative Maxos LED. The simple and easy to install row lighting system combines high efficiency LEDs with innovative optics that are optimised for a variety of applications. For shelf access, versions with narrow optics were used; for the order picking area and the traffic routes within the warehouse, wide-beam optics were selected. The modern lighting control sets new standards for sustainability with Occuswitch DALI and Dynalite. As a result, the lighting can be controlled everywhere on the basis of attendance and the amount of daylight.
To protect from damage, the lighting solution was mounted directly on the ceiling between the concrete beams.
In addition, the offices were equipped with PowerBalance lights.
Robust Pacific LED moisture-proof lamps were installed in the entrance area of the loading bays, while Luma exterior lighting was installed in the courtyard to provide even, glare-fee lighting.

Thanks to the innovative products and lighting planning from Philips, AXRO was able to significantly improve its environmental impact. The high energy efficiency of the Maxos LED (max. 117 lm/w) allows for energy savings of up to 67% compared with the old fluorescent lights. The connected load was reduced from 27,050 W to just 8,899 W. The lighting regulation system allows for additional electricity savings of up to 37% as the result of the optimised operating time and the ideal coordination of daylight and system performance.Employees also benefit from the new lighting equipment: both the good colour reproduction (Ra > 80) and the increased lighting intensity (up to 500 lux) are especially noticeable. They ensure the overall improvement in the quality of light, even though the lighting is installed higher than before. The maximum total savings for the new system (LED lighting solution + lighting control) amounts to an impressive 1,027 euros per month. The CO2 output was reduced to a minimum by 79%. This is an impressive result for the AXRO company and an excellent example of a partnership collaboration within the project team.
