One of the largest battery storage facilities has been built in Slovakia. It confirms the growing importance of large-capacity BESS

Another major large-scale battery energy storage (BESS) project has been added to Slovakia. The stand-alone system with an output of 20 MW and a capacity of 20 MWh represents one of the largest projects of its kind in the country and highlights the growing importance of battery storage in ensuring the flexibility of the electricity system.

One of the largest battery storage facilities has been built in Slovakia. It confirms the growing importance of large-capacity BESS

According to published information, the storage facility was built in a location between the villages of Nižná and Veľké Kostoľany near the Jaslovské Bohunice energy hub. The project uses the Huawei BESS container solution and is connected to a voltage level of 110 kV. The system has an installed capacity of 20 MW, an energy capacity of 20 MWh, and the project documentation also includes the possibility of future expansion to 100 MW.

Battery storage facilities are becoming an indispensable part of the energy industry
The development of large-capacity battery systems represents one of the most important trends in the current electric power industry. With the growing share of wind and solar energy, the need for technologies that can flexibly respond to short-term differences between electricity production and consumption is also growing.

Modern battery storage facilities can provide multiple services at once. In addition to time shifting of energy, they enable the provision of support services for the electricity system operator, alleviation of grid congestion, limitation of peak demand, and more efficient integration of renewable energy sources.

A trend that is gaining momentum in Slovakia as well
Although Slovakia was among the countries with the least number of large battery systems a few years ago, the situation is gradually changing. The first commercial projects of stand-alone storage facilities and battery systems integrated with photovoltaic power plants are increasing.

The development of these technologies is also supported by the upcoming changes in the flexibility market, the growing importance of support services for the electricity system, and the gradual improvement of the economics of battery projects.

Example of technological implementation
The project in the Nižná location represents an example of the implementation of a large-capacity BESS connected directly to the distribution system at a voltage level of 110 kV. Such solutions will play an increasingly important role in stabilizing the electricity system, increasing operational flexibility and creating conditions for the further development of renewable energy sources in the coming years.

According to the published information, the project was implemented by PV SERVICE PLUS using Huawei Digital Czech Republic technology. This is one of the examples of the growing segment of large-capacity battery storage in the Central European region.
