SEPS increases connection capacity to distribution companies

Slovak Electricity Transmission System, a. s. (SEPS) is increasing the connection capacities for both consumption and supply at the interface of the transmission and distribution system. SEPS is thus creating the necessary prerequisites for the development of the electricity sector in accordance with the expected development captured in the approved state energy policies and in the relevant action plans.

The system as a pillar of a successful energy transformation
This capacity for consumption will gradually be increased by 25% after the conclusion of amendments to the connection contracts with regional distribution system operators and for delivery to the TS it will be set at a flat rate of 30% of the connection capacity for consumption.

SEPS is obliged, pursuant to the Energy Act, to ensure adequate capacity and operability of the transmission system. It must also take into account the possibility of improving its energy efficiency, even without additional new investments in transmission equipment. Given the ongoing energy transformation and the use of electricity as the main energy carrier in the future, this obligation is also a challenge.

"We are aware that the electricity system will be the main pillar of the successful transformation of the energy sector. Therefore, in cooperation with the operators of regional distribution companies, we have proceeded with an adjustment that will enable an increase in connection capacities for consumption at the interface of the transmission and distribution system and the efficient use of these capacities for both consumption and supply," said Martin Magáth, Chairman of the Board and CEO of SEPS.

Increasing connection capacities
The adjustment compared to the current situation consists in removing the dispatching reserve and in adopting technical and organizational measures on the part of both SEPS and the operators of regional distribution systems.

The aim is to use the existing infrastructure as efficiently as possible. The management of the efficient use of connection capacities at the interface of the transmission and distribution system is thus primarily in the hands of the operators of regional distribution systems, with unchanged conditions for maintaining the security of electricity supplies.

Increasing the capacity of connections to the PS, at the PS/DS interface, creates a necessary prerequisite for increasing consumption and connecting new distributed generation to regional distribution systems, which will ultimately help achieve some of the EU climate goals set out in the document "Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan for 2021-2030" (NECP).
