SEVA: The power and number of charging points for electric vehicles are growing
Since 2020, the number of public charging points for electric vehicles has increased approximately fourfold, but their total capacity has increased more than sevenfold. The most significant shift has occurred in the ultra-fast charging segment, and the number of charging points outside the largest cities is also increasing. This was reported by the Slovak Electromobility Association (SEVA).
Fast charging dominates
“It is not just new points that are appearing on the map, but especially more powerful technologies. This is very important from the point of view of the real use of electric vehicles, because it is precisely the higher performance that determines whether public charging works not only as an additional service, but also as a full-fledged part of comfortable travel. The data today shows that Slovakia is moving in the right direction in this direction,” said SEVA data analyst Martin Jelenek.
In some parts of Slovakia, fast charging already dominates. In the Zlaté Moravce district, 23 out of 31 points are fast and ultra-fast DC charging (74.2%), in the Zvolen district it is 47 out of 83 points, i.e. more than half of the network. “If a region has a high share of DC points, it means higher readiness for transit, business trips and more intensive everyday use. This is a very important signal from the point of view of further market development,” explained SEVA director Patrik Križanský.
In terms of the ratio between the number of personal battery electric vehicles on the road and the number of public charging points, the Prešov region comes out on top. There are 388 public charging points for 2,270 personal battery electric vehicles, or 5.85 electric vehicles per point.
For comparison, the national average is 8.64 electric vehicles per public point. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the Bratislava region, where the high number of electric vehicles creates the greatest pressure on infrastructure – there are 803 public charging points for 9,660 personal electric cars, or approximately 12 electric vehicles per point.
Easy charging without unnecessary barriers
Many public chargers in the Martin district (94 charging points and 41 locations for 385 electric cars, i.e. 3.9 electric cars per charging point), in Dolny Kubín (3.1 vehicles per point), Poprad (3.4 vehicles per point) and in Zvolen (3.9 electric cars per point).
"The data shows that a high-quality public charging network is not only being created where the largest number of electric cars is today, but also in transit, tourist and regional centers that are preparing for further market growth in advance," said SEVA.
In addition to chargers, according to the association, it is important that charging is easy and without unnecessary barriers. "This means availability 24 hours a day, the possibility of ad hoc charging, but also understandable and convenient payment methods," stated Križanský. The charger database shows that almost 85% of public locations operate 24/7 and approximately 84% allow one-time ad hoc charging without the need for registration. This increases the availability of the service even for people who do not use a specific network regularly.
As of the end of the 1st quarter of 2026, 3136 public charging points were registered in Slovakia in 1219 locations. The total capacity of the public infrastructure reached 206.6 megawatts.
