Successful modernization of LEDs lighting in Nestlé Slovakia.

Interview with Mr. Ing. Josef Hlinka, engineer of energy of Nestlé Slovakia about successful modernization of LEDs lighting in storage areas of their business.

1, When and why did you start considering the idea - modernization of lighting in your storage areas?
I work for international company Nestléwhich takes care about maintaining sustainable environmental development.
Environmental targets of the company are reducing energy consumption and replacement of equipments which produce dangerous waste and which are after the end of lifetime the waste too.

2, Who did you contact? How the modernization ran?
I was a graduate of the FEI ČVTU department of Electronic Engineering - focusing on lighting. In 2006 I attended a presentations of profIng. Alfonz Smola PhDon SEIA in Bratislava. The topic was the current trends in lighting technology.Very interesting information was in the section LED. New types of LEDs reach luminous efficacy above 80 lm / W with color rendering index Ra > 80. There are no stroboscopic effect. Based on our specifications, we carried out research possibilities in the marketwecontacted potential suppliers and on the basis of a choice, we prepared a project to illuminate the storage for the investment plan year 2010. In August 2010 was an exchange of stock lighting system implemented.

3, Why did you decide for LEDs as a technology that replaced the previously low-pressure mercury lamps?
This lighting system is fully compatible with environmental and security policies Nestlé

a) Reducing energy consumption of lighting but the quality of the light is same.

b) Removing mercury lamp as a source of hazardous waste.

c) Extending life of LEDs light sources on 50,000 to 70,000 hours. No maintenance for 6-8 years.

d) Removing the stroboscopic effects during the handling with forklifts what brings safety at work.

4, What energy and economic savings you were able to achieve during this period and what is the overall impression of management and employees?
We have replaced the lighting system with 68 fluorescent lamps with input 80W/pc. The new system has 51 LED lamps with input 56W/pc. The total installed capacity of the lighting system was reduced from 5.44 kW to 2.85 kW, what represents energy saving by 47% . Lighting quality is comparable to that of the original system. After two years of using is the system maintenance-free.

5, Thank you very much for the interviewwhich will certainly serve and inspire other companies how ecologically reduce operating costs of lighting while increasing safety and quality of lighting in the warehouse and production areas. Implementation of the project was provided by Ecologic - experts of LEDs lighting.
